 | | The following Tips are from Margaret Radcliffe's book The Knitting Answer Book - published by Storey Publishing.
Q. Can I use two strands of finer yarns instead of the yarn specified in my pattern?
A. Yes. The two strands must knit up at the correct gauge and make a fabric appropriate for the project...not too thick or thin to stretchy or stiff.
Q. Can I usa a novelty yarn instead of a plain yarn if the gauge is right?
A. Sometimes. If a simple pattern stitch or plain Stockinette is used, then you can usually substitute a novely yarn successfully. Beware of combining a complex, textured yarn with a complex pattern stitch. You may put in a lot of effort and use expensive yarn, but end up with a fabric that doesn't show off either the yarn or the pattern stitch to best advantage.
Q. What does worsted mean?
A. This is a confusing term because it is used in two entirely different ways. Most frequently, you'll see references to "worsted weight" yarn or "knitting worsted", the yarn weight most frequetnly used by knitters. It knits up to 5 stitches per inch. The other meaning of worsted refers to the way wool fiber is spun. Worsted preparation yarns are very even, smooth surfaced yarns that wear well.
